The Kulas Foundation Theatre Composer Initiative is a three month fellowship program providing emerging, early-career composers with first-hand experience creating music for theatre. This initiative engages composers in a collaborative process under the guidance of the show producer and director to compose and produce original music for at least one full production in CPT’s Season. Composers gain hands-on learning experiences and play an integral role in the creative process. The program is intended to significantly grow CPT’s capacity for developing original music and supports the growth of local artists.

Cleveland Public Theatre, Northeast Ohio’s most innovative and adventurous theatre announces the 2013-14 Joan Yellen Horvitz Director Fellows.
The Director Fellows Program is a year-long residency that provides mentoring, formal classwork and practical work. Fellows assistant direct, create new work, and direct at least one show in CPT’s season. Raymond is proud to announce that the two women who have been selected as the 2013/2014 Director Fellows are Melissa Therese Crum and Caitlin Lewins. “The intent of this new initiative is to address Cleveland’s limited pool of directors with experience creating new theatrical work” said Raymond Bobgan, CPT’s Executive Artistic Director. Each Director Fellow receives an award of $3,000 and full underwriting of all of their learning and artistic activities during the fellowship, culminating in a production in Spring of 2014. Cleveland Public Theatre, Northeast Ohio’s most innovative and adventurous theatre is proud to announce The Nord Playwright Fellowship funded by a generous grant from The Nord Family Foundation. The Nord Playwright Fellowship, a year-long program for emerging playwrights from Northeast Ohio, raises CPT’s new play development program to an even higher level. Fellows are given space at the theatre to write, create and rehearse. Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan is proud to announce Juliette Regnier as the inaugural Nord Playwright Fellow. Over the course of a year, Ms. Regnier will be interacting with and learning from designers, actors, directors and other writers. She will also have opportunities to have her work staged at a variety of points in the process. Cleveland Public Theatre is proud to announce they are one of five recipients of the inaugural 50/50 Applause Award from the International Centre for Women Playwrights (ICWP). The 50/50 Applause Award is for theatres in the United States that have at least 50 percent of their 2011-2012 season feature plays written by women. Other recipients include Little Colonel Theatre, Pee Wee Valley, KY; Nora Theater, Cambridge, MA; Playwrights Horizons, New York, NY; and, Symmetry Theatre, Berkeley, CA.
Cleveland Public Theatre is committed to supporting new, adventurous work by minorities, women and local writers and is proud to have had 50% of their 2011-2012 season feature plays by women, the majority of those being Northeast Ohio artists.
CPT continues to support a diverse group of playwrights though out new work development series like The Dark Room, Springboard and Big Box.

Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT), Northeast Ohio’s most innovative and adventurous theatre announces the second year awardee of The Director Fellows Program funded by a generous grant from Joan Yellen Horvitz, a long-time friend of CPT.
The 2012-2013 Director Fellow is Denise Astorino. Ms. Astorino will receive $3,000 and full underwriting of her learning and artistic activities during the fellowship year, culminating in a full production of an original work in May of 2013 in Cleveland Public Theatre’s Store Front Studio.
“The intent of this initiative, inaugurated last September, is to address Cleveland’s limited pool of directors by providing a program that will allow select directors with extraordinary potential to focus intensively on artistic growth over the course of a season,” said Raymond Bobgan, CPT’s Executive Artistic Director. Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan announces that Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) has received a one million dollar grant from The Kresge Foundation’s Building Reserve Grant program. The awarded funds will be utilized to offset the cost of long-term care and maintenance of the buildings and facilities on the CPT campus. Now in its 30th year, CPT serves as the anchor of the Gordon Square Arts District on Cleveland’s near west side. The CPT campus at West 65th Street and Detroit Avenue is comprised of four buildings that feature multiple performance and rehearsal venues. The dynamic performing arts center is a hub for original, adventurous and relevant works of performance and is dedicated to cultivating local artists in the creation of new work. CPT engages the community through a bold series of educational programs for urban youth, residents of public housing and homeless adults. The Kresge Foundation’s one million dollar grant will allow CPT to continue to thrive as a creator and as an artistic home for hundreds of artists across multiple disciplines. Read More ›
