Antaeus Dance and Travesty Dance Group

CPT is proud to present a weekend of premiere dance performance from Antaeus Dance and Travesty Dance Group as part of DanceWorks 10!

How do we reconcile the infinite – prospect – with the intimate – refuge? Antaeus Dance Director Joan Meggitt and performer Doug Lodge share premiere excerpts from their new evening-length dancework, exploring how the individual and the community function, both as discreet elements and in confluence. The performance will feature new music by composer Bill Sallak and original film by artist Cynthia Penter.

Dawning is a 50-minute contemporary dance/theatre project conceived and choreographed by Travesty Dance Group’s Cleveland Director Kimberly Karpanty. “Dawn” refers to a time of morning before the sun appears at the horizon and is used throughout the work as a metaphor for the awakening of the individual and of a community. Dawning incorporates two short films and poetry by Henry Vaughan (17th century) and Randy Guilhas (20th century).

Antaeus Dance has established a reputation as an intelligent and daring dance company, here in Cleveland and beyond. The company has been creating thought-provoking work that explores the intersection of individual expression and collective experience since its premiere in 2001. Antaeus Dance boasts an impressive repertory of 27 original danceworks by Director Joan Meggitt and an ever-growing collection of premiere dances by the Artistic Staff. Antaeus Dance combines physical stamina and discipline with a deep awareness of personal vulnerability, inviting the audience to experience a unique combination of subtlety and athleticism.

Travesty Dance Group was conceived to support and produce the creative projects of its founding members, Kimberly Karpanty (Cleveland), Rebecca Malcolm-Naib (Philadelphia) and Karen Stokes (Houston) and invited guests. Travesty Dance Group made its debut in May 1997 at Case Western Reserve University’s Mather Dance Center. The company earned not-for-profit status in 2002, and has performed numerous times in the three “home” cities as well as in Seattle, New York City, Phoenix, and Toronto. Enriched by collaborative process, Travesty Dance Group seeks to bring diverse original dance work to a variety of communities. The founders believe in dance as a basic human art, embracing both the complexities of contemporary society and the life affirming essence of movement. The fundamental hope of Travesty Dance Group is to create dance that rises above travesty to inspire and enlighten.
