Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) is hiring Education Staff

CPT is seeking part-time Support Teaching Artists (Cleveland Act Now Academy and CMHA Cleveland Act Now programs) and a full-time Teaching Artist & Site Coordinator (CMHA CAN) to support and implement CPT Education programming. Theatre experience is a plus. We are looking to build a strong core of artists who are dedicated to creating work to further racial and economic justice.


CMHA CLeveland Act now

CMHA Cleveland Act Now (CAN) takes place in partnership with Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) at community centers for children and families who live in public housing. Under the guidance of CPT Teaching Artists, young artists learn how to create and perform their own plays, dance, poetry, music, and visual art. These multidisciplinary performing arts activities improve academic skills, instill empathy and responsibility, build character, and enhance creative thinking. The students regularly perform at CMHA community centers as well as arts festivals throughout Cleveland. CMHA CAN is offered at four CMHA estates: Lakeview Terrace, Woodhill Homes, Outhwaite Homes, and Riverside Park.

CLEVELAND ACT NOW ACADEMY (CAN ACADEMY)

Cleveland Act Now (CAN) Academy is a free performing arts program for younger teens and youth from Cleveland and surrounding neighborhoods, held on-site at Cleveland Public Theatre. The Juniors program serves youth ages 7-10, and the Seniors program serves youth ages 11-14. Young artists engage in rigorous (and fun!) theatre training, learning acting fundamentals, script analysis, storytelling techniques, and play creation.


SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Experience in at least one theatre-related arts discipline (dance, drumming, singing, acting, creative writing, etc.)
  • Experience teaching children and/or teenagers
  • Demonstrated ability to be or become a strong role model for Cleveland youth
  • Energy, responsiveness, flexibility, creativity
  • Attention to details, ability to work independently
  • Openness to learning new techniques in the creation of original performance material

TEACHING ARTIST & SITE COORDINATOR, CMHA CAN — JOB RESPONSIBILITES

  • Successfully co-creating and implementing curriculum for year-round CMHA CAN programming at two sites, during which youth will build storytelling skills (incorporating body, voice, and ensemble) and community, which will culminate in at least three artistic presentations (including at least one fully-produced production in CMHA community centers). Students are currently preparing for their fully-produced production. When CMSD schools are in session, classes run during afterschool hours. During the summer, classes are offered throughout the day.
  • Collaborating with CMHA CAN team, CPT Staff from applicable departments, and guest artists to successfully present the artistic presentations and fully-produced productions at assigned sites
    • Youth present one fully-produced performance of an original work in late February/March
    • Youth present additional community performances throughout the year
  • Managing part-time CMHA CAN Teaching Artists and Teaching Artist interns in successful implementation of CMHA CAN programming
  • Attending meetings with CMHA CAN Team and Education Director to share outline highlights, session progress, questions and challenges of program implementation
  • Creating detailed and  accurate lesson plans, attendance records, session progress notes for the program as indicated by Education Director
  • Completing other duties that relate to the CMHA CAN program and CPT education/artistic programming as determined by Education Director
  • Salary range is $36k to $40k based on work experience. Benefits include health insurance and paid time off. We are looking to fill this position as soon as possible.

SUPPORTING TEACHING ARTIST, CMHA CAN/CAN ACADEMY JOB RESPONSIBILITES

  • Successfully support Teaching Artists & Site Coordinators in implementing CMHA CAN programming, actively engaging with youth as they build storytelling skills (incorporating body, voice, and ensemble) and community
  • Collaborating with CMHA CAN and  CPT Staff from applicable departments to successfully present artistic work at assigned sites
    • Youth present one fully-produced performance of an original work in late February/March
    • Youth present additional community performances throughout the year
  • Attending meetings with CMHA CAN Team and Education Director to share outline highlights, session progress, questions, and challenges of program implementation
  • Other duties that relate to the CMHA CAN program as determined by Teaching Artists & Site Coordinators and Education Director
  • This position pays $17/hour. We are looking to fill this position as soon as possible.

CPT COVID-19 WORK POLICY

Education staff are required to work in-office approximately 35 hours per week. On average there could be an additional 5-10 hours of work per week, with the option to work from home when the needs of the position allow. Employees are required to be vaccinated.
