CPT Announces the 2011 – 2012 Season!

Cleveland Public Theatre’s Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan announces the 2011 – 2012 season:

Seven World Premieres!

Cleveland Public Theatre is the place for original, adventurous and relevant works of performance. The 2011 – 2012 season delivers on CPT’s mission. The season includes seven world premiere productions, five by Northeast Ohio artists. Six of the plays are devised theatre, originating from unconventional creative processes. CPT also continues its commitment to artist development with groundbreaking programs: Big Box, seven weeks of world premiere workshop productions by Northeast Ohio artists; Springboard, a new series for staged readings and director development; the inaugural Leap/Conceive project for works-in-progress; and DanceWorks a premiere showcase for local companies and choreographers.

“This is an exciting time to be creating theatre in the U.S. as old hierarchal models are being challenged, and innovation in form and the creative process celebrated,” says CPT Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan. “CPT’s 2011 – 2012 season embraces this spirit and the result is theatre that resonates with diverse perspectives and aesthetics.”

On the forefront of a national movement, CPT nurtures artists creating original work through a process called “devised theatre.” The structure, form and the language of these plays can originate from the rehearsal process, rather than from a pre-written script. The creation method for devised works is varied and often includes actors as co-authors. Monster Play, created by Jeremy Paul and Theatre Ninjas, Lulu Project created by Matthew Earnest and the return of last year’s hit Conni’s Avant Garde Restaurant are among the six devised works featured this season. Five of the productions are by local play creators.

Partnerships contribute to the breadth of the season with a bold co-production with Oberlin College of Charles Mee’s Iphigenia 2.0 and a workshop series of new works by students in the Northeast Ohio Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. The season also features collaborations with Verb Ballets, Theatre Ninjas, The Lunar Stratagem and Opera Per Tutti.
