Range of Duties: Assist with financial record keeping and preparation of audited financial statements.

  • DATES & STIPEND: This unpaid 20 hour/week internship starts June 1st and can run as late as Sept 25th (17 weeks). Earlier end dates are possible based on the intern’s schedule. Exceptional candidates may be awarded a modest stipend paid at the end of the internship.
  • SUPERVISION: The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Assistant General Manager.
  • FOCUS: This internship will focus on not-for-profit financial management and record keeping.
    • LEARNING GOALS:
      • To learn how to read and evaluate the meaning of financial statements.
      • To learn and experience the steps in preparing for a financial audit conducted by an outside auditor.
      • To learn basic bookkeeping using Intuit QuickBooks
      • To understand how accounting and financial management are practically applied in the day-to-day decision-making for a not-for profit performing arts organization.
      • To develop a clear understanding of the value of financial management in the life of an organization.
    • EXAMPLES OF ANTICIPATED TASKS:
      • Preparation of financial reports, work papers and schedules for presentation to auditor
      • Participation in meetings with outside auditor
      • Entry of account payables and receivables into QuickBooks (previous knowledge not required)
      • Archiving of previous years financial records
      • Management of daily bank deposits.

This internship will also include exposure to a wide range of other arts management issues including marketing, fund-raising and theatrical production.

The intern will work on a daily basis with experienced arts management professionals.

Requirements:

  • One term of coursework in bookkeeping, accounting or finance
  • Must have completed two years of undergraduate study
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and comfortable with learning new software packages
  • Solid communication (oral, written, and phone), interpersonal, and writing skills
  • Solid work ethic combined with a dry sense of humor
  • Candidates with experience in any aspect of community or academic theatre will be especially considered
  • Candidates with experience using QuickBooks will be especially considered
