Everyone's A Critic - Review of Rastus and Hattie

Written by Judith Weiss

Saw this last night; it was by far the best produced, best designed, best acted play I’ve seen at CPT. I loved the scenic projections, they set the stage perfectly for each time and place without using a lot of furniture. When the plain wall opened up to become a tree that let Malik climb up and try to fly, that was a marvel. The time transformation—from an urban, 21st Century setting to a dreamlike, unspecified time and place in the middle of the show—came as quite a surprise, but it made sense in the end, if you didn’t try to figure it out too literally. I thought the dialogue was brilliant, dealing with a serious, many-layered subject in a funny, moving, and relatable way. Rastus and Hattie, starting out as the simplest characters, turned out to have the most complex thoughts and emotions. The acting by all players was excellent. Bravo, CPT!
