Cleveland Public Theatre announces 2021/2022 Season

EVOLVE

Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT)’s Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan is proud to announce the 2021/2022 season, which delivers on CPT’s mission of raising consciousness and nurturing compassion through theatre that is daring, relevant, and socially conscious.

CPT invests in innovation and diversity, and has been recognized regionally and nationally as a leader in the support and development of new work, the amplification of emerging voices, and for producing and presenting work from artists creating theatre outside the mainstream.

The theme of CPT’s 2021/2022 season is EVOLVE.

“Cleveland Public Theatre brings people together. The strength of our programming is not only in the individual power of each project and each production, but how they weave together. As each program, each person, impacts the next, the community impact grows exponentially. We don’t present to the community; we are a convergence of communities. We believe society can evolve, and it is when we come together that these changes happen. Our strategy is to center artists, to amplify the voices of artists amidst our diverse communities, and to share their work broadly. What happens when we have conversations with people who see the world differently than what we know? We challenge our thinking, we open our hearts, and our inner world expands. Together, we evolve.

—Raymond Bobgan, CPT EXECUTIVE Artistic Director

Cleveland Public Theatre’s New Play Development

CPT’s mission is to raise consciousness and nurture compassion through groundbreaking performances and life-changing education programs. CPT’s programming agenda is to produce work outside the mainstream, offering a much broader range of work available to the Cleveland public and expanding the impact and originality of theatre across the country. CPT strives to make work that is excellent, extraordinary, locally impactful, and nationally competitive.

Our new play development programs are based on our years of experience, community input, and key principles of:

  • focusing on artists;
  • valuing diversity of approach, aesthetics, and perspective;
  • balancing impact with investment.

CPT is a nationally recognized hub for the development of new theatre that is known for work that is extraordinary, edgy, and relevant. We seek to be a model for nurturing local talent in similar sized markets, the most regarded cultivator of new theatre for Cleveland audiences, a laboratory for promising research and investigation, and a launcher of nationally significant new plays.

Catapult Summary

The most extensive of CPT’s development programs, Catapult is focused on projects that are outside the mainstream and align with CPT’s diversity of aesthetic. Catapult is intended to move projects from early to mid-development phase, to being “production-ready.” Each process is customized to the work and the playwright’s need. Projects may receive a series of readings, significant rehearsal time, and workshop productions.

Playwright/Creators of the selected Catapult projects will receive the Nord Family Foundation Fellowship and, while developing their work, will play an active role in the life of the theatre.

CPT’s Kulas Foundation Theatre Composer Initiative Application

Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) is now accepting applications for The Kulas Foundation Theatre Composer Initiative, a yearlong fellowship program providing early-career composers with first-hand experience creating music and sound design for theatre.

This initiative engages composers/designers in a collaborative process, under the guidance of the show producer and director, to compose and produce original music for full productions and works-in-development in CPT’s Season, and to learn about other parts of the creative and production process of theatre. Composers gain hands-on learning experiences through sound design opportunities.

The program is intended to significantly grow CPT’s capacity for developing original music and sound design, and to support the growth and emergence of local artists.

To ensure the development of work past this residency, both the Composer/Designer and Cleveland Public Theatre will retain rights to composed materials developed through the Theatre Composer Initiative.
